AUSTRALIAN high-energy, thermal coal export earnings and volumes are running at record rates on the back of strong Asian power station demand. While it is early days, the July 2018 revenue figure is 31 per cent up on July 2017.

EXPORT volumes rose 10 per cent to a record 19.87 million tonnes, representing an annual rate of 238 million tonnes.

FEDERAL Resources Minister Matt Canavan said the figures backed up previous expectations that Australia’s high-energy coal would be in demand from Asia’s growing coal-fired power sector as it chased better air quality and lower emissions.

THE strong thermal coal exports come as combined exports of east coast thermal coal, used to generate electricity, and coking coal, used to make steel, overtake West Australian exports of iron ore as the nation’s top export.

ACCORDING to the ABS data, July’s combined coal exports beat iron ore for the third straight month, coming in at $5.58bn, compared to iron ore’s $4.74bn.

CHINESE coal-fired power generation was up 7.3 per cent in the first seven months of this year, from a year earlier.

AND Australia’s higher-quality coal, in terms of energy content, is being favoured over domestic mines and import competitors such as Indonesia as China tries to combat air pollution.

THE strength in coal prices has favoured those prepared to invest against a growing campaign and activism against thermal coal.

MEANWHILE, in Australia, global warming theory-obsessed politicians of both major parties and persuasions are giving up the countries once prized economic advantage of having cheap, reliable energy, by decommissioning and blowing up their last remaining coal-fired power plants. The Greens and Labor parties even cheering the economic vandalism…

NEIGHBOURING State, Victoria, whose Socialist, Hard Left government, with an obvious obsession with ‘green’ energy and the climate faith has closed Hazelwood coal-fired power station, which did not merely supply Victoria with a quarter of its power but also helped bail out South Australia who are now largely dependent on sunshine and breezes for their energy security.

ALL this destruction of Australia’s once cheap, efficient, relaible, baseload power supply has led to Australia now having some of the highest power prices in the world. South Australia officially “the highest“…

THE world has got the message: South Australia is closed for investment in heavy industry, and so, soon, will be the rest of Australia if they don’t learn from the dire consequences of destroying cheap power.

AUSTRALIA’S politicians, intent on appeasing the UN climate gods, over its own citizens, continue the mad and ruinous rush into unreliable-energy – wind and solar – assuring rampant energy poverty by denying its own citizens the use of the miracle black rock that provides cheap, reliable and increasingly ultra-clean energy via new generation Supercritical and HELE (High Energy Low Emissions) coal-fired power plants currently being built in Asia and across the globe…

DON’T expect to hear or read about the massive expansion of global coal-fired power stations or Australia’s record coal exports via the majority Leftist press.

THE Pravda mainstream media wants you to think that wind and solar are booming. The opposite is, of course, the truth.

GREEN Energy – Killing The Earth To Save It

Windräder über dem Nebelmeer

More than 700 citizens’ initiatives have been founded in Germany to campaign against what they describe as “forests of masts”, “visual emissions” and the “widespread devastation of our highland summits.” | Spiegel

EARLIER today I posted a report, via WUWT, on Al Gore’s failed “save the planet” legacy – the deforestation of pristine Sumatran rainforest, linked to palm oil production, that is making Indonesia warmer by up to 10°C !

ADD to that the senseless destruction of ‘carbon-sequestering’ trees, with the enormous loss of pristine rainforest threatening endangered animal species like the majestic Sumatran elephant…

ACROSS the other side of the world, in Germany, Armageddon-Al’s other “save the planet” eco-fantasy – industrial wind turbines – are causing just as devastating a blow to Europe’s once uncorrupted countryside…

WHILE watching this video produced by Deutsche Wildtier Stiftung (German Wild Animal Foundation), that is being shown in 50 cinemas across Germany today, ask yourself one simple question:

  • IF “Greens” (Al Gore et al) love nature, why aren’t they more concerned about carpeting pristine landscapes with industrial wind turbines?

@AlGore Your ‘Save The Planet’ Legacy – Palm Oil – Is Making Indonesia Warmer!

THE title of James Delingpole’s epic must read, sums it up perfectly…

“Killing the Earth to Save it: How Environmentalists are Ruining the Planet, destroying the economy and stealing your jobs.”

Watts Up With That?

WUWT readers may recall Al Gore’s failed Goldman Sachs palm oil fantasy and the subsequent train wreck. Now, it gets even worse. Deforestation to make palm oil plantations is causing the very thing Al Gore rails against – warming of the climate.

From the EUROPEAN GEOSCIENCES UNION:

Deforestation linked to palm oil production is making Indonesia warmer by up to 10°C !

In the past decades, large areas of forest in Sumatra, Indonesia have been replaced by cash crops like oil palm and rubber plantations. New research, published in the European Geosciences Union journal Biogeosciences, shows that these changes in land use increase temperatures in the region. The added warming could affect plants and animals and make parts of the country more vulnerable to wildfires.

Palm oil is the most widely used vegetable oil in the world, appearing in the ingredients’ list of many consumer goods, from chocolate…

Indonesia Doubles Coal Use, Ratifies “Climate” Treaty

Meanwhile, the politically correct, climate-obsessed, eco-brainwashed West continues to destroy their economies, pursuing useless “unreliable” energy – wind and solar – that do not reduce global emissions, at all.

Such energy fantasies simply increase the cost of doing business, making industry uncompetitive, shifting jobs and ’emissions’ offshore to third-world countries where environmental regulations and working conditions are substandard, leading to real environmental and social issues, like forest destruction, air particulate pollution and sweat shops.

Draconian Climate policy, formulated by unelected global elites at Paris-like gabfests, really are “killing the planet to save it.”

Tony Heller noted this juxtaposition of news from Indonesia this month.

So perhaps it is time to recall just what it was that Indonesia agreed to in the Paris Agreement.

My full analysis of Indonesia’s INDC, which the Carbon Tracker website rated as “Inadequate” from last November is here. But the gist of it is this:

The BAU case projects emissions of 2881 GtCO2e by 2030:

image_thumb37

Therefore, a cut of 29% leaves a target of 2046 GtCO2e, still well above 2005 emissions of 1800 GtCO2e.

But this is not the whole story.

As the above makes clear, land use change accounts for 63% of all emissions, totally dwarfing the burning of fossil fuels. This figure reflects the enormous amount of forest that has been cut down, often to make room for palm oil and pulp wood plantations. On top of that,
