167 Years Ago Today : Bushfires Burn 5 Million Hectares or A Quarter Of Victoria

Black Thursday post-restoration

Black Thursday, February 6th. 1851, as depicted by William Strutt in 1864

The Black Thursday bushfires were a devastating series of fires that swept through Victoria on February 6, 1851. They are considered the largest Australian bushfires in a populous region in recorded history, with approximately 5 million hectares, or a quarter of Victoria, being burnt. Twelve lives were lost, along with one million sheep and thousands of cattle.

The year preceding the fires was exceptionally hot and dry and this trend continued into the summer of 1851. On Black Thursday, a northerly wind set in early and the temperature in Melbourne was reported to have peaked at 47.2 degrees C (117 degrees F) at 11:00am.

“The temperature became torrid, and on the morning of the 6th of February 1851, the air which blew down from the north resembled the breath of a furnace. A fierce wind arose, gathering strength and velocity from hour to hour, until about noon it blew with the violence of a tornado. By some inexplicable means it wrapped the whole country in a sheet of flame — fierce, awful, and irresistible.” (Wikipedia / Climatism bolds).

In 1851, carbon dioxide levels were around 285 ppm. Today, carbon dioxide “pollution” levels are around 400 ppm.

CLIMATE change alarmists, like Tim Flannery and the ABC, claim Australian bush fires are unprecedented and becoming more extreme, thanks to human carbon dioxide “pollution” emissions.

THEY tell you this because the ultimate prize of the eco-activist is the control of carbon dioxide (energy). Virtually every human activity, including breathing, releases carbon dioxide. Consequently, greenhouse gases have become weaponised through the fear of “catastrophic climate change” in the “sustainability” (sic) effort to control all aspects of your life.

Aussie Heatwave Electricity Shortfall, Hospital Emergency Measures, Coal Blamed

“THE takeaway lesson for Australian politicians and people throughout the world should be that you can’t run hospitals and businesses on unreliable electricity. Next time turning off the cafeteria lights might not be enough; people will die if this renewable energy idiocy continues. Lets hope enough politicians learn this lesson quickly enough to avert a major disaster.”

Watts Up With That?

Guest essay by Eric Worrall

h/t JoNova – South Australia and the Australian State of Victoria learned the hard way that when power demand surges, you can’t turn up the solar panels.

Melbourne hospitals switch off lights as mercury rises

Grant McArthur and Aleks Devic, Herald Sun
January 19, 2018 7:36pm

PATIENTS were left in the dark after one of Melbourne’s biggest hospitals switched off its lights and non-essential equipment as temperatures soared on Friday.

The Alfred turned off the lights on wards, in corridors and cafeterias about midday in a bid to conserve power.

The dramatic move followed a Department of Health memo to hospital chiefs on Thursday night asking them to ensure back-up power supplies were effective, prompted by the increased risk of disruption in the heatwave.

“Hospitals within Alfred Health have taken the initiative to act as good corporate citizens and reduce the use of electricity that…

‘Green’ Premiers Red-Faced: Wind Power Fiasco Ends in Dirty Diesel Debacle

DIESEL generators hooked up to energy networks in Australian states with a heavy reliance on “green” energy as part of a last-ditch effort to keep the lights on this summer!

SO, climate theory obsessed politicians blow up and decommission baseload “dirty” fossil-fuel power stations, to stop bad weather, and replace them with “dirty” fossil-fuel diesel generators to stop blackouts!

YOU literally can’t make up this unreliable-energy-insanity stuff up anymore.

AND the further cost to taxpayers already skyrocketing power bills!!

🤦‍♂️

STOP THESE THINGS

SA’s Premier: dogged by dirty diesel debacle.

Australia’s ludicrous attempt to run on sunshine and breezes sometimes reads like the farcical plot of an episode of Blackadder or Fawlty Towers.

In a ‘you couldn’t make this up if you tried’ moment, Australia’s ‘greenest’ States, Victoria and South Australia (which has been forced to wear its mantle as ‘Australia’s wind power capital’, more like a crown of thorns), have been reduced to running on diesel generators.

Consumers set to cop cost of diesel back-up
The Australia
Samantha Hutchinson
14 November 2017

Victorian consumers could foot the bill for a summer energy plan using diesel generators as a stopgap during periods of peak demand.

In an about-face by the Andrews government, diesel generators will pump up to 100 megawatts of power into Victoria’s energy grid as back-up in case of extreme heatwaves this summer.

The plan by the Australian Energy Market Operator…

Wind Power Chaos Promises to Deliver Mass Summer Blackouts Across Australia

“With the closure of Victoria’s Hazelwood plant in April, Victorians are going to get a taste of what their South Australian neighbours have been living with for years: routine load shedding and mass blackouts.”

The mind boggles for SA who are going to incur more mass blackouts, if that’s possible, with the closure of Hazlewood which provided 25% of SA baseload power. Backup coal-fired power from Victoria, on demand, when the wind stopped blowing or it was night time and the SA solar panels went to bed.

It’s gonna be one hell of a summer in southern Australia. Actual lives are now at risk thanks to reckless, feckless, feel-good “global warming” policies ! 🔥

STOP THESE THINGS

The only businesses which are bouncing along in South Australia are those selling portable diesel generators, candles and LED headlamps.

The sort of staple items you might find on a Doomsday Prepper’s list. However, in Australia’s so-called wind power capital, BYO and DIY power and lighting are everyday essentials.

SA’s vapid Premier, Jay Weatherill pretends that he has everything under control. Australia’s Energy Market Operator clearly thinks otherwise.

AEMO warns of more blackouts
The Australian Financial Review
Mark Ludlow and Angela MacDonald-Smith
15 June 2017

Australia is at risk of more blackouts next summer despite new initiatives from energy regulators and governments, according to forecasts from the Australian Energy Market Operator.

The AEMO report to be released on Thursday also warns the looming gas shortage – which resulted in Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull declaring an “energy crisis” – could still occur if too much gas was exported overseas.

TERRIBLE Week-Long Heat Wave : 41°C in the Shade and 71°C in the Sun

VICTORIA.

______

THE HEAT WAVE.

______

A TERRIBLE WEEK.

______

MELBOURNE, January 13, 1905

The heat wave in which Melbourne has sweltered for a week is not yet broken. On Monday the Observatory registered a maximum of l04.5deg. in the shade; on Tuesday 80.9; Wednesday 108.5; Thursday 105.6; and to-day 108.5 [42°C]. The city has been, so thoroughly baked that the very earth and buildings seemed to exude heat to-day, and people, especially those of advanced years and young children, felt the severe strain placed upon their powers of physical endurance. The glare of the sun about midday was almost painful, and tho gripmen employed on the tramways found the lever so hot that it was necessary to protect their hands.

During the afternoon the sky became clouded, and the heat of the sun became less intense, but there was no relief in the shade, and even after sundown, the heat was most oppressive. The thermometer at the Observatory showed at 9 o’clock this morning 98.7 [37°C] in the shade, and 141 [60°C] the sun. An hour later 101 in the shade, and 153 in the sun were recorded, and by 12 o’clock the readings had advanced to 106 in the Shade and 161 [71°C] in the sun. The shade readings at half-past 1 stood at 108.2 [42°C], and at 3 o’clock at 103.5, which was the highest for the day.

The temperature fell very, slowly. The shade reading at 6 o’clock was 101.5, and at 7 o’clock 90.8.

The Government Astronomer issued a forecast to-night that a cool change is approaching, which will give relief in the southern districts, but that there is no present indication of relief for the exhausted settlers inland, where the temperatures during the week ranged to 118 deg [48°C] in the shade.
