GEOLOGIST Viv Forbes on what life would look like under the eco-totalitarian control of ‘zero-emissions’ zealots…

CAREFUL what you wish for!

Greens dream of a zero-emissions world without coal, oil and natural gas. They need to think what they wish for.

First there would be no mass production of steel without coke from coking coal to remove oxygen from iron ore. People could cut trees in forests for charcoal to produce pig iron and crude steels, but forests would soon be exhausted. Coal saved the forests from this fate.

We could produce gold and silver without using mineral hydro-carbons and with ingenuity we could probably produce unrefined copper, lead and tin and alloys like brass and bronze. But making large quantities of nuclear fuels, cement, aluminium, refined metals, plastics, nylons, synthetics, petro-chemicals and poly pipes would be impossible.

Making wind turbines and solar panels would also be impossible without fossil fuels. A wind turbine needs lots of steel plus concrete, carbon fibre and glass polymers as well as many other refined metals – copper, aluminium, rare earths, zinc and molybdenum. Solar panels and batteries need high-purity ingredients – silicon, lead, lithium, nickel, cadmium, zinc, silver, manganese and graphite – all hard to make in backyard charcoal-fired furnaces. Transporting, erecting and maintaining wind and solar farms plus their roads and transmission lines needs many pieces of diesel-powered machinery.

Every machine on earth needs hydro-carbons for engine oil, gear oil, transmission oil, brake fluid, hydraulic oil and grease. We could of course use oils from, seals, beeswax and whales for lubrication – the discovery of petroleum saved the whales from this fate.

Roads would be a challenge without oil-based bitumen. The Romans made pretty good roads out of cobble-stones (this would ease unemployment). But hard labour would not sit well with aging baby-boomers or electronic-era Millenniums.

Cars, railways, motor launches, aeroplanes, I-Phones, TV and cat-scans would be out. Horses, oxen, sulkies, wooden rowing boats, sailing ships, herbal medicine and semaphore would have a huge revival. Some wood-burning steam tractors may still work and wood-gas generators may replace petrol in some old cars.

This is the return to the “zero-emissions” world that Green extremists have planned for us.

But modern life cannot not be supported by a pre-coal/oil economy. Without reliable electricity and diesel-powered farm machinery and transport trucks, cities are un-sustainable. In Green-topia 90% of us people will need to go.

But Greens should not expect us to go quietly.

Shock News : Australia’s Carbon Tax Has Killed Jobs And Destroyed Nation’s Competitiveness

Former ABC Chairman, and newly appointed chief business advisor to the Abbott Government, Maurice Newman, lays out the ugly cost of the Carbon (dioxide) Tax and the delusional green socialist agenda, implemented by the former Labor/Greens coalition.

Climate policies helped kill manufacturing, says Maurice Newman

GRAHAM LLOYD – THE AUSTRALIAN – DECEMBER 31, 2013 12:00AM

THE unprecedented cost of energy driven by the renewable energy target and the carbon tax had destroyed the nation’s competitiveness, Tony Abbott’s chief business adviser has declared.

Maurice Newman also says climate change policies driven by “scientific delusion” have been a major factor in the collapse of Australia’s manufacturing sector. “The Australian dollar and industrial relations policies are blamed,” Mr Newman said. “But, for some manufacturers, the strong dollar has been a benefit, while high relative wages have long been a feature of the Australian industrial landscape.”

In an interview, Mr Newman said protection of climate change policies and the renewable energy industry by various state governments smacked of a “cover-up”.

He said an upcoming review of the renewable energy target must include examination of claims made in federal parliament that millions of dollars were being paid to renewable energy projects that allegedly did not meet planning guidelines. Mr Newman’s comments follow those of Dow Chemicals chairman and chief executive Andrew Liveris, who said Australia was losing its natural advantage of abundant and cheap energy.

“As far as new investments go, our primary energy sources of natural gas and electricity are now or will soon become negatives to any comparative calculation,” Mr Liveris said.

“Average prices of electricity have doubled in most states in recent years and the unprecedented contraction in consumption threatens a ‘death spiral’ in which falling consumption pushes up prices even further, causing further falls in consumption,” he said.

Mr Newman said Australia had become “hostage to climate-change madness”. “And for all the propaganda about ‘green employment’, Australia seems to be living the European experience, where, for every ‘green’ job created, two to three jobs are lost in the real economy,” he said.

The scientific delusion, the religion behind the climate crusade, is crumbling. Global temperatures have gone nowhere for 17 years. Now, credible German scientists claim that ‘the global temperature will drop until 2100 to a value corresponding to the little ice age of 1870’.”

Mr Newman said the climate change establishment, through the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, remained “intent on exploiting the masses and extracting more money”.

When necessary, the IPCC resorts to dishonesty and deceit,” he said.

In Australia, Mr Newman said, Victorian Democratic Labour Party senator John Madigan had told parliament how politicians and bureaucrats were paying tens of millions of dollars annually to wind turbine operators that had not received final planning approval.

“It could be hundreds of millions of dollars and we have a government that is keen to rein in the budget deficit,” he said. “If you can save a million dollars that should never have been spent, we should be doing it.”

Senator Madigan said the issuing of renewable energy certificates to one of the non-compliant wind farms, at Waubra in Victoria, reflected “a culture of noncompliance arising from systematic regulatory failure that impacts every wind farm in Victoria”.

He said the issue involved “the pain and suffering of little people living in rural Australia, environmental damage, fraud on a grand scale, deception, lies and concealment“.

A new study says the warming in the last quarter of the 20th century may been caused by clean-air policies, which led to more solar radiation getting through:

Clean-air policies in developing countries have resulted in reduced levels of anthropogenic atmospheric aerosol pollution. Reductions in aerosol pollution is thought to result in a reduction in haze and cloud layers, leading to an increase in the amount of solar radiation reaching the surface, and ultimately, an increase in surface temperatures. There have been many studies illustrating coherent relationships between surface solar radiation and temperature however, a direct link between aerosol emissions, concentrations, and surface radiation has not been demonstrated to date. Here, we illustrate a coherence between the trends of reducing anthropogenic aerosol emissions and concentrations, at the interface between the North-East Atlantic and western-Europe, leading to a staggering increase in surface solar radiation of the order of ?20% over the last decade.

This suggests not much more warming may come, other than the long-term bounce-back from the Little Ice Age.

Another study challenges the claims of warming preachers that global warming would slow coral growth by making the oceans less alkaline:

Takahashi, A.; Kurihara, H.
Coral Reefs, Volume 32, Issue 1, pp.305-314

The increase in atmospheric CO2 concentration, which has resulted from the burning of fossil fuels, is being absorbed by the oceans and is causing ocean acidification. Ocean acidification involves the decrease of both the pH and the calcium carbonate saturation state. Ocean acidification is predicted to impact the physiology of marine organisms and reduce the calcification rates of corals. In the present study, we measured the rates of calcification, respiration, photosynthesis, and zooxanthellae density of the tropical coral Acropora digitifera under near-natural summertime temperature and sunlight for a 5-week period. We found that these key physiological parameters were not affected by both mid-CO2 (pCO2 = 744 ± 38, pH = 7.97 ± 0.02, ?arag = 2.6 ± 0.1) and high-CO2 conditions (pCO2 = 2,142 ± 205, pH = 7.56 ± 0.04, ?arag = 1.1 ± 0.2) throughout the 35 days experimental period. Additionally, there was no significant correlation between calcification rate and seawater aragonite saturation (). These results suggest that the impacts of ocean acidification on corals physiology may be more complex than have been previously proposed.

UPDATE

Remember how Penny Wong, then the Climate Change Minister, used a drought in 2009 to frighten people into believing the government’s global warming scare?

Research shows that this severe, extended drought is clearly linked with global warming… There is nowhere that this challenge is more serious than the Murray Darling Basin.

The latest Bureau of Meteorology data suggests it’s high time Wong apologised for that baseless and irresponsible scare:

Mad Mike Kelly: vote Labor or you’ll turn “Snowy Mountains into the Sandy Mountains”

Herald Sun | August 20 2013

The global warming frenzy is so yesterday, yet some Labor MPs still don’t get how ridiculous all that warming alarmism now sounds and are making fools of themselves..

Take Mike Kelly – tipped by Rudd to be the next Defence Minister. Here he is at the candidates’ forum held by the Narooma Chamber of Commerce on Friday:

This election is about the people who aren’t here who can’t vote because they are too young to. The election is about their future. If we don’t provide them with the full rollout of the NBN, the better schools program, and clean energy future they won’t have a future.

We won’t be competing in the region and the suffering we will have inflicted on ourselves through not dealing with climate change will turn the Bega Valley into the Death Valley, the Sapphire Coast into the Saline Coast and the Snowy Mountains into the Sandy Mountains. We can’t afford catastrophic climate change so I want you to work with me on that as well.

Is Kelly seriously claiming that if we don’t vote for Labor and its global warming policies that the Snowy Mountains will turn to sand and the Bega Valley into Death Valley?

A man that irrational has no place in politics.

UPDATE

Warning is a big pile of sandy bunkum

Herald Sun  Andrew Bolt | August 22 2013

Mike Kelly

Minister Mike Kelly has declared that without Labor’s “clean energy future” our children “won’t have a future”. Picture: Gary Ramage Source: News Limited

I WANT the next person in charge of our nation’s defence not to be so batty that he thinks the Snowy Mountains will turn to sand if we don’t vote Labor.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has bad news: his next defence minister, if he’s re-elected, will indeed be Mike Kelly.

Dear God. A man with his beliefs could have us declaring war on Mars or arming our soldiers with rhubarb.

Last week at a meet-the-candidates session in his seat of Eden-Monaro, Kelly declared that without Labor’s “clean energy future” our children “won’t have a future”.

“The suffering we will have inflicted on ourselves through not dealing with climate change will turn the Bega Valley into the Death Valley, the Sapphire Coast into the Saline Coast and the Snowy Mountains into the Sandy Mountains,” he said.

A comment like that should actually disqualify anyone from high office.

Let me point out a few things to Kelly, our Minister for Defence Materiel.

The world hasn’t warmed for 15 years. Granite mountains would not turn to sand even if it did warm a few degrees.

Labor’s global warming policies, costing $20 billion a year, would not stop any warming anyway, making at the very most a difference of 0.0038 degrees by 2100, according to scientist Professor Roger Jones. I can only assume that Kelly is either a fool or a fraud – a man who believes telling a lie is fine if it’s a noble cause.

But how many similar falsehoods have we heard from people who feel licensed by global warming to say any damn thing?

Remember Finance Minister Penny Wong using a drought in 2009 to frighten people into believing Labor’s global warming scare?

“Research shows that this severe, extended drought is clearly linked with global warming,” she said. “There is nowhere that this challenge is more serious than the Murray-Darling Basin.”

But go to the Bureau of Meteorology website and check rainfall data for the Murray-Darling. Not only did the drought end almost the moment Wong spoke, but rainfall patterns over the century seem not to have changed.

You were deceived – deliberate or accidental hardly seems to matter.

People who spread fears to justify enormous spending on programs that make no difference should not be allowed near the nation’s finances. Or defence.
