HOW Climatism Destroyed California

‘Green’ Energy Poverty | California

“California was the experiment, and now it is the proof: environmentalism is worse for ‘social justice’ than any degree of climate change is.

Environmentalism is the indulgent fantasy of remote political elites and their self-serving business backers. If California doesn’t prove this, what would?”

— Ben Pile (Spiked Online)

Read it all…

Science Matters

Ben Pile writes at Spiked The problem in California is poverty, not climate change. Excerpts in italics with my bolds.

The heatwaves and the fires are natural – the electricity blackouts are not.

Events leading up to today’s power cuts follow a bizarre history. The fact that advanced economies need a continuous supply of power is well understood. Yet for three decades, the political agenda, dominated by self-proclaimed ‘progressives’, has put lofty green idealism before security of supply and before the consumer’s interest in reasonable prices. Even if the heatwaves experienced by California were caused by climate change, are their direct effects worse than the loss of electricity supply?

California’s green and tech billionaires, and its business and political elites, certainly seem to think so. But they are largely protected from reality by vast wealth, private security, gated estates, and battery banks. The high cost of…

H/t @AndyOz2

ACCORDING to man-made global warming climate change protagonists, our climate and weather is stagnate, and that before ‘evil’ mankind bludgeoned the atmosphere with its “dirty” carbon dioxide gas, climate was stable and pure.

FOR nearly a decade, California has experienced serious drought, causing the usual (progressive) suspects to jump on the harrowing conditions like bees to honey, using their coordinated talking points; “Permanent Drought” and “The New Normal” in an attempt to convince the masses of their own CO2-centric, medieval superstitions …

LA RESERVOIRS FULL – ANOTHER CLIMATE CHANGE DUD-PREDICTION TO ADD TO THE LONG LIST

THE CA government website shows that California reservoirs are currently all sitting above historical averages.

WHAT now do alarmist/activist scientists like Katharine Hayhoe and Michael Mann, who have been scaring CA residents witless for years with their “Permanent Drought” and “New Normal” propaganda, have to say about all this water? Crickets, as per usual.

GLOBAL WARMING FAIL : Record Snow When You Were Assured By Climate ‘Scientists’ That There Would Be None

WHEN will the CSIRO, Australia’s premier ‘scientific’ body restrict their 2001 “no snow by 2020” prediction? - CLIMATISM.png

WHEN will the CSIRO, Australia’s premier ‘scientific’ body retract their 2001 “no snow by 2020” prediction?

SNOWFALL will become “A very rare and exciting event…

“Milder winter temperatures will decrease heavy snowstorms” IPCC (2001)

“End of Snow?” NYTimes (2014)

“Good bye winter. Never again snow?” Spiegel (2000)

“The high impact scenario for 2020 leads to reductions of 30-40 days in average season lengths. At higher sites such as Mt Hotham, this can represent reductions in season duration of about 25%, but at lower sites such as Mt Baw Baw the reduction can be more significant (up to 60%)” CSIRO (2003) (Kevin Hennessy, Penny Whetton, Ian Smith, Janice Bathols, Michael Hutchinson and Jason Sharples)

“We must face up to the fact that if our societies are not prepared to make changes to their greenhouse gas emissions and the pumping of massive quantities of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, then in a worst case scenario, we won’t even get to 2020 with a viable snow sports industry in this country. – Andrew Fairley, head of the Alpine Resorts Co-ordinating Council.

REAL science has provided humanity with an unequivocal advantage over the ravages of nature’s most potent enemies – weather, climate and the A-Z of viral and bacterial intrusions.

IT has achieved this through a simple yet rigorous process known as the scientific method. The goal, to prove a hypothesis wrong, not right.

IF all tests and computations of empirical evidence cannot be falsified, then the hypothesis stands until such other evidence disproves the finding.

“97% CONSENSUS” U.N. climate ‘science’ fails the ‘scientific method’ time and time again.

A classic example of this failure of scientific rigour and the unwillingness to disprove a hypothesis is in the arena of snow.

GLOBALLY, winter and spring snow levels have risen significantly since records began in the late 70’s, according to, accredited, Rutgers University data. With a significant rise in snowpack recorded over the past decade – the years we are constantly told are “the hottest ever”.

GLOBAL WARMING alarmists now claim that current abnormal snow levels are “to be expected” in a “warming world”. What they refuse to accept, in their CO2-centric psychosis, is that in order to produce snow, you need *cold* air.

THE big question still remains: Is Australia’s premier science body, the CSIRO, and the Ski industry willing to retract their 2002 “no snow by 2020” prediction?

HERE’s some recent ‘global’ evidence that these “experts” should consider…

2004 : Mark Lynas told us…

“Snow has become so rare that when it does fall – often just for a few hours – everything grinds to a halt. In early 2003 a ‘mighty’ five-centimetre snowfall in southeast England caused such severe traffic jams that many motorists had to stay in their cars overnight. Today’s kids are missing out . . . Many of these changes are already underway, but have been accelerating over the last two decades. Termites have already moved into southern England. Garden centres are beginning to stock exotic sub-tropical species, which only a few years ago would have been killed off by winter…” – Mark Lynas

Winter is no longer the great grey longing of my childhood. The freezes this country suffered in 1982 and 1963 are – unless the Gulf Stream stops – unlikely to recur. Our summers will be long and warm. Across most of the upper northern hemisphere, climate change, so far, has been kind to us…

2006 : Daniela Jacob of Max Planck Institute for Meterology, Hamburg …

“Yesterday’s snow… Because temperatures in the Alps are rising quickly, there will be more precipitation in many places. But because it will rain more often than it snows, this will be bad news for tourists. For many ski lifts this means the end of business.”

2006 : The Independent‘s somber editorial admonished us that the lack of snow was evidence of a “dangerous seasonal disorder”…

The countryside is looking rather peculiar this winter. It seems we have a number of unexpected guests for Christmas. Dragonflies, bumblebees and red admiral butterflies, which would normally be killed off by the frost, can still be seen in some parts of the country . . . Some might be tempted to welcome this late blossoming of the natural world as a delightful diversion from the bleakness of this time of year. But these fluctuations should be cause for concern because it is overwhelmingly likely that they are a consequence of global warming . . . all this is also evidence that global warming is occurring at a faster rate than many imagined…

2007 : BBC “One Planet Special”…

“Ice, snow, and frost will disappear, i.e. milder winters” … “Unusually warm winters without snow and ice are now being viewed by many as signs of climate change.”

2007 : Western Mail (Wales Online) … article, entititled “Snowless Winters Forecast for Wales as World Warms Up” quotes one of the global warming movement’s key figures, Sir John Houghton, former head of the IPCC and former head of the UK Met Office…

Former head of the Met Office Sir John Houghton, who is one of the UK’s leading authorities on climate change, said all the indicators suggest snowy winters will become increasingly rare He said, “Snowlines are going up in altitude all over the world. The idea that we will get less snow is absolutely in line with what we expect from global warming.”

2007 : Die Zeit

“First the snow disappears, and then winter.”

2008 : Another prediction

A study of snowfall spanning 60 years has indicated that the Alps’s entire winter sports industry could grind to a halt through lack of snow…. In some years the amount that fell was 60 per cent lower than was typical in the early 1980s, said Christoph Marty, from the Swiss Federal Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research in Davos, who analysed the records. ”I don’t believe we will see the kind of snow conditions we have experienced in past decades,” he said.

“For the first time, they realised that their attention should be directed to a common enemy,” says Andrew Fairley, head of the Alpine Resorts Co-ordinating Council, which advises the State Government and oversees the management of Victoria’s six snow resorts. “And that enemy is climate change.”

Like those who rely on the Great Barrier Reef, the Australian ski industry sees itself as a frontline victim of global warming. A 2003 CSIRO report, part-funded by the ski industry, found that the resorts could lose a quarter of their snow in 15 years, and half by 2050. The worst case was a 96 per cent loss of snow by mid-century.

CSIRO – Simulations of future snow conditions in the Australian alpine regions

Conclusion:

The low impact scenario for 2020 has a minor impact on snow conditions. Average season lengths are reduced by around five days. Reductions in peak depths are usually less than 10%, but can be larger at lower sites (e.g. Mt Baw Baw and Wellington High Plains).

The high impact scenario for 2020 leads to reductions of 30-40 days in average season lengths. At higher sites such as Mt Hotham, this can represent reductions in season duration of about 25%, but at lower sites such as Mt Baw Baw the reduction can be more significant (up to 60%)…

We have very high confidence (at least 95%) that the low impact scenarios will be exceeded and the high impact scenarios will not be exceeded.

*

NOW, of course, climate ‘scientists’ are trying to dig themselves out of snow that’s kept falling…

Looking back at 65 years’ worth of statistics, Environment Canada’s senior climatologist David Phillips noted that since 1948, winter temperatures in the prairie regions have increased by an average of four degrees Celsius… Ironically, warmer weather can mean greater snowfall. “As we warm up, we may see more moisture, we may see more moist air masses, and therefore we could very well see more snow rather than less snow, because the air masses are going to be more moist and so therefore you’re going to be able to wring out more snow than you would be if it was dry air,” Phillips said.

*

CONCLUSION

LISTEN to what the ‘experts’ promised you back then. Because, if they got it wrong then, how can you trust what they are foretelling today or tomorrow? The answer is you cannot, because they have no idea what long-range conditions Mother Nature is going to serve up in such a “chaotic” and complex system as our climate.

AND, most importantly, does the CSIRO and “97% of all climate experts” still stand by their “end of snow” predictions? Or is their alarmist sophistry simply more global warming climate change fear-mongering based on CO2-centric ideology, eco-religious dogma and overheated UN IPCC and CSIRO climate computer models that do not accord with observed reality?

IN the era of Global Warming Climate Change hysteria, every and any “extreme weather” or climatic event is instantly blamed on humans and their wicked ways.

RUSHING to ideological and schizophrenic judgement is at best lazy. At worst, such deliberate grandstanding prevents salient solutions to real environmental problems and climate mitigation challenges we face everyday as a society.

THIS fashionable and dangerous eco-paradigm no more obvious than in the tragic California fires, still smouldering.

MENTION “land management” as a solution to prevent future wildfire catastrophes, and the climate mafia will viciously deride one a “denier”, “flat-earther”, “right wing nut job”, “shill of the oil industry” or maybe a “racist” if you’re still hanging around.

ANY name will do, as long as the pejorative is sufficient enough to prevent the conversation shifting away from “CLIMATE CHANGE!”.

SO, while California burned and the Climate Ambulance Chasers blamed, more measured minds were assessing causes of the fires with data and reasoning instead of defaulting to emotions, politics and groupthink ideology.

Paul Homewood is one who thinks rather than blames. His research helping to quell the superstition and paranoia endlessly levelled by global warming zealots whenever catastrophe strikes.

*

HOMEWOOD’s latest post begins with a typical Paul Driessen fact-packed and, as usual, beautifully written masterpiece “Blaming climate – ignoring incompetence – CFACT“.

Blaming climate – ignoring incompetence – CFACT

*

HOMEWOOD then nuts out the data surrounding the Cali fires, dispelling alarmist claims of CO2-induced “extreme weather” as the root cause …

CFACT are of course dead right. There is really very little point in blaming weather/climate when you can do nothing about it anyway. It is government’s job to tackle the problems they can do something about.

But as for claims about climate change, is there actually anything to them?

Let’s take a look at temperatures for a start.

Orland, CA is near to the Paradise fire and has good, long term meteorological data. Using data from the Western Regional Climate Center, we can plot summertime daily maximums back to 1903:

https-::wrcc.dri.edu:cgi-bin:cliMAIN.pl

https://wrcc.dri.edu/cgi-bin/cliMAIN.pl?ca6506

As we can see, the hottest summers were in 1908 and 1917. Summers now are much cooler than the period prior to 1940.

We find the same pattern with the highest daily temperatures measured each year:

chart-2_thumb

http://climod2.nrcc.cornell.edu/

Record temperatures of 120F were set in 1905 and 1908 at Orland. The highest this year was just 107F:

image_thumb71

https://wrcc.dri.edu/WRCCWrappers.py?sodxtrmts+046506+por+por+maxt+none+mmax+5+01+F

Indeed there has been very little out of the ordinary at all with temperatures this summer:

chart-3_thumb

http://climod2.nrcc.cornell.edu/

Of course it has also been dry this year, but again nothing unusual as far as that part of California is concerned. ( Div 2 is the Sacramento Drainage Division):

canvas_thumb

https://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/cag/divisional/time-series/0402/pcp/12/9/1895-2018?base_prd=true&firstbaseyear=1901&lastbaseyear=2000

And as we know, the 20thC was an unusually wet interlude, as far as California’s longer history is concerned:

california_drought_timeline_thumb_thumb

https://notalotofpeopleknowthat.wordpress.com/2016/10/16/nasa-megadrought-lasting-decades-is-99-certain-in-american-southwest/

Anybody who uses tries to blame California’s wildfires on “extreme weather” is not only flying in the face of the facts, but also failing to deal with the real causes.

TRUMP Is Right: Poor Land Management Is Leading To Bigger California Fires

‘GREEN’ environmental policies – killing the earth (and people) to ‘save’ it:

“LAWS like the National Environmental Policy Act and the Endangered Species Act, according to Rep. Tom McClintock, R-Calif., “have resulted in endlessly time-consuming and cost-prohibitive restrictions and requirements that have made the scientific management of our forests virtually impossible.”
These laws, and others like them, have drastically reduced the amount of forest thinning and controlled burns that used to effectively keep wildland from becoming a danger to people and property.
“One problem for landowners is disposing of deadwood. Dozens of biomass facilities that burn tree parts that can’t be used for lumber have closed due to emissions regulations and competition from subsidized renewables and cheap natural gas,” wrote The Wall Street Journal.

According to the USDA Forest Service, there are an estimated 129 million dead trees over a territory of 8.9 million acres across California—a fact that even liberal Vox brought attention to as a major concern. And this doesn’t even account for the shrubs and brush that have been the primary contributors to the most recent fires.”

Another year, another set of deadly fires burning up California.

The devastation is heartbreaking. The “Camp Fire” has almost completely obliterated the Northern California town of Paradise. It’s now officially the deadliest fire in California history. Over 40 people have died.

This horrific blaze, along with the Woolsey and Hill fires in Southern California, have inflicted untold property damage, laid waste to towns and huge swaths of wildland, and taken dozens of lives. These wildfires are becoming an annual occurrence in the Golden State.

Are these calamities just the “new normal,” as California Gov. Jerry Brown recently said?

They don’t have to be.

President Donald Trump took to Twitter to blast poor land management as a cause of the continual fires.

Some have argued that the kind of land management…

6 To 8 Feet Of Snow Forecast For California Mountains

“That snow outside is what global warming looks like” | George Monbiot | The Guardian

Watts Up With That?

The latest weather model projections show significant amount of snow over the next 72 hours. This will certainly help California’s drought situation. However it’s going to completely cripple road travel over I80, Highway 50 299 32 and possibly Highway 70. The majority of snow is expected on Thursday night, and low snow levels down to 1000 feet are possible by Friday night.

In addition, gusty winds will give blizzard like conditions in the mountains, along with high winds in the Delta and foothills of the Sierra Nevada

In addition, significant amounts of rain will fall. Some low lying areas may see some flooding.

In this video, author and scientist Tony Heller brilliantly debunks ambulance chasing climate scientists who come out of the woodwork every time there is a natural disaster, like wildfires in California. In fact, burn acreage in the US has plummeted over the past 85 years, as CO2 has increased.

From the “California is in a permanent drought due to climate change – because we said so” department comes this good news from NASA, CA DWR, and NOAA

From NASA:

Abundant Snowpack Blankets the Sierra Nevada

Snowpack on the Sierra Nevada provides one-third of the water consumed by California citizens, farmers, and businesses each year. For the first time in at least five years, there should be more than enough of it.

There’s going to be a lot of meltwater sometime.

The snow amounts in California’s Sierra Nevada mountain range this winter are difficult to wrap your head around, reports Sott.net. In many cases topping 500 inches, they are some of the highest totals in memory.

At the Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows resort, seven feet fell in just the past week. The snow is so high that it buried chairlifts and ski patrol shacks.

The resort has received 565 inches (47 feet) this season, including a 45-year record of 282 inches in January. On Thursday, it announced that its ski area would remain open through July 4.

Since 1962, it will mark just the fourth instance of Independence Day skiing (the other years were 1998, 1999, and 2011), according to a resort spokesperson.
