The pause within the pause.

Contrary to popular myth, summer sea ice extent in the Arctic is not in a death spiral.
As the above DMI graph shows, August extent has been remarkably stable since 2007.
Back in March, the “experts” were telling us that the record low extent last winter would inevitably lead to lower summer extent.
For instance, Rick Thoman the climate science manager for the National Weather Service’s Alaska region told us:
“If we are starting out very low that gives a jump on the melt season. For the last few years, we have had extremely low ice cover in the summer. That means a lot more solar energy absorbed by the darker open water. That heat tends to carry over from year to year.”
NSIDC’s Ted Scambos said:
“Thin ice and beset by warm weather – not a good way to begin the melt season,”

No real shrinking of Arctic sea ice in 10 years. No significant “global warming” for nearly 20 years.
All this despite record CO2 emissions and record alarmist hot air spewed from experts and the fake news mainstream media!
Mother Nature’s a beyatch!

Greenland’s melt season ended a month ago, and since last September the ice sheet has grown at close to record rates.
Much was made of the anomalously warm year in 2012, which was quickly linked to climate change.
I doubt whether Guardian readers will be allowed to read about the latest news.
Meanwhile Arctic sea ice extent is running well above the level of the last two years:
This time last year the Guardian wheeled out the serially discredited Peter Wadhams to scare us all with threats of an Arctic death spiral:
The only thing in a death spiral is the IQ of gullible Guardian readers.

Following on from the lengthy account of some of the boats which have made their way through the Northeast Passage down the years, Nauticapedia have a handy list of ones that have crossed the Northwest Passage.
The list is a long one, and many are icebreakers, so I won’t bother rehashing the lot. But some do stand out:

Evangelical climate change orgs, experts and mainstream CAGW-sympathetic media: BBC, National Geographic, Sierra Club, ABC, The Guardian, Whadam and Al Gore et al., assured us (prayed for) that Arctic summer sea-ice would have disappeared by 2014.
Despite record and increasing CO2 emissions, sea-ice levels in the Arctic have remained largely the same for nearly a decade.
Just don’t mention the other pole, the Antarctic, which continues to expand at record levels, setting record low temps as it grows. Inconvenient realities contradictory to what climate ‘experts’ and those billion dollar computer models predicted. Sshhhh.
Last week I mentioned how WeatherUnderground was touting the ‘Great Arctic Cyclone of 2016’ as being a repeat of the ice crusher cyclone in the summer of 2012. People that want to see Arctic sea ice reach new lows, so that they can shout things like “See, told you! Climate change!” were banking on it to bring sea ice extent to new record scarcity, accompanied by much wailing and gnashing of teeth, while secretly grinning to themselves “take that, deniers”. It’s a strange bunch of people, in my view, that rally around wanting to see such things happen.
So far, NSIDC hasn’t shown much of an impact from the GAC16, and in the last couple of days, ice has upticked slightly as it regrouped (magnified inset mine):
The storm last week, if it had major impact, would have put the plot closer to the green 2012 line. We…

Global Warming alarmists media and activist groups; BBC, Sierra Club, National Geographic, Al Gore assured us that the Arctic would be ice-free by now.
You were lied to and Arctic sea ice is doing just fine:
Leonardo DiCaprio and those same alarmist media outlets and activist groups also preach the dire fate of the cuddly Polar Bear to push their man-made global warming agenda. This is also a lie.
Arctic sea ice and those cuddly polar bears are doing just fine.
“Polar bears consume 2/3 of all the food they need for the year during April-June and so far, ice conditions are looking just fine.”
So, here we are near the end of the first month of the Arctic spring and there is still more ice than usual off Labrador and conditions in the Barents Sea are improving daily. The fear-mongers can blather all they like about the potential risks of bears swimming in summer – but spring is the critical seasonas far as sea ice is concerned for polar bears and all polar bear biologists know it. Polar bears consume 2/3 of all the food they need for the year during April-June and so far, ice conditions are looking just fine.
There is enough ice where there needs to be ice for polar bears to gorge themselves on new-born ringed and bearded seals – and that’s really all that matters. More ice off Labrador means more hunting ground for the Davis Strait polar bears that depend on the tens of thousands of young…

USS Skate surfaced at the North Pole in 1959 and numerous other locations during Arctic cruises in 1958 and 1959 http://wp.me/p7y4l-1UQ
Ice at the North Pole in 1958 and 1959 was not so thick. I blame capitalism and CO2.

ARCTIC CIRCLE (March 10, 2016) USS Hartford (SSN 768) surfaces in the Arctic Circle near Ice Camp Sargo during Ice Exercise (ICEX) 2016. Servicemembers and civilians assigned to Arctic Submarine Lab clear ice from the hatches to allow for surface access.
ICEX is a five-week exercise designed to research, test, and evaluate operational capabilities in the region. (U.S. Navy video by Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Tyler Thompson and Staff Sgt. Edward Eagerton/Released
