A welcome dose of reality from Cato:
“Harvey Is What Climate Change Looks Like: It’s time to open our eyes and prepare for the world that’s coming.” That August 28 Politico article by Slate weatherman Eric Holthaus was one of many trying too hard to blame the hurricane and/or flood on climate change.
Such stories are typically infused with smug arrogance. Their authors claim to be wise and well-informed, and anyone who dares to question their “settled science” must need to have their eyes pried open and their mouths shut.
There will doubtless be similar “retroactive forecasting” tales about Irma, so recent story-telling about Harvey may provide a precautionary warning for the unwary.
I am an economist, not a climatologist.* But blaming Harvey on climate change apparently demands much lower standards of logic and evidence than economists would dare describe as serious arguments.

Flooding in homes and businesses across Houston was still on the rise when Politico ran a provocative article, titled “Harvey Is What Climate Change Looks Like.”

Politico was not alone, as another news outlet called the one-two punch of Harvey and Irma the potential “new normal.” Brad Johnson, executive director of the advocacy group Climate Hawks Vote, says Harvey and Irma are reason to finally jail officials who “reject science.”
Rather than focus on the victims and offer solutions for speedy recovery, pundits and politicians in the wake of Harvey focused on saying, “I told you so.”

Australia’s decade-long dalliance with sunshine and breezes is about to get really, really serious.
South Australia’s reputation as both Australia’s wind power capital and the home of the highest power prices in the world, and mass load shedding and statewide blackouts is no coincidence.
The implicit purpose behind Australia’s Federal Large-Scale Renewable Energy Target is to promote wind and solar power at the expense of the cheap and reliable stuff.
The Federal LRET has been so ‘successful’, that South Australia is now the butt of international jokes. However, this Summer will find Victorians in the same predicament.
South Australia blew up its last coal-fired power plant this year (an early victim of the LRET) and the Federal Coalition stood idly by while Victoria allowed its 1,600 MW Hazelwood plant to close earlier this year – all to cheers from lunatics like Jay Weatherill and Daniel Andrews.
