“The business of skepticism is to be dangerous. Skepticism challenges established institutions. If we teach everybody, including, say, high school students, habits of skeptical thought, they will probably not restrict their skepticism to UFOs, aspirin commercials, and 35,000-year-old channelees. Maybe they’ll start asking awkward questions about economic, or social, or political, or religious institutions. Perhaps they’ll challenge the opinions of those in power. Then where would we be?”

Sagan also correctly points out:
“For hundreds of thousands of years human beings have been burning and cutting down forests…”
He may well be pleased to note that fossil fuels have greatly eased the burden of forest destruction, whilst greatly improving human welfare, prosperity and life expectancy:
Without access to fossil fuels, every tree on the planet would have been cut down by now, to provide for peoples heating, cooking and industry.
When we’re burning fossil fuels, it means we’re not burning something else and cutting down forests. The more we burn fossil fuels… Continue »
